Trust the seasons of your life. One of my biggest challenges is knowing that it's ok not to be productive all the time – whether that's a minute, hour, day, week, or even month.⁠
⁠
It can feel like wasting time, and that there's so much that I should be doing... working on my book, recording a podcast episode, putting something on the blog, going for a run.⁠
⁠
But I've found that I have seasons for creation and focus, and seasons for pressing pause. For rewatching Desperate Housewives (guilty), sleeping more, or just sitting and listening to the birds.⁠
⁠
It's about getting the overall balance right.⁠
⁠
When I'm feeling unproductive and too tired to work on creative projects, usually I'm just exhausted. And I have to listen to that.⁠
⁠
If my downtime lasts longer than usual, it's time to look closer at what's going on behind the scenes. But usually when I take care of myself and slow down, my energy soon starts picking up.⁠
⁠
How about you? Rather than looking for a productivity or creativity hack next time you need it, slow down and listen to what you really need. Take the pressure off and remember that you need to tend to yourself first before anything else.⁠
⁠
Recharge your batteries and get closer to 100% again before pressing play.⁠
⁠
To do just that, I'm spending 10 days by the sea in Devon on the west coast of England. It's exactly what I need right now.⁠
⁠
It's the perfect place to do some more writing and creative work, and that might still be to come, but for now... nothing's on the agenda.

P.S. Some of the mental blocks overcome in the making of this podcast include: I sound too posh, I'm too English, everyone and their dog has a podcast, etc etc etc. ⁠

As with everything that scares you: identify the blocks and negative thoughts, feel the feelings, forgive yourself, accept yourself... and then do it anyway.

What are you feeling called to create? What exists only in your mind that you want to bring into the world? All of the biggest changes in your life start with big, wild dreams. What are yours?⁠

For a while, my motto has been "make beautiful things". This is what I'm doing with my book at the moment, and it's also influencing my choices about the work I'm taking on and saying no to. Once you dream up the world you want to create for yourself, it's easier to know what's for you and what to say no to.⁠

Big leaps make it happen, but it all starts with dreaming and imagining.

I was meant to be moving to Japan in April... but considering the state of the world, that hasn't happened just yet 😄 ⁠

So instead, I'm still in the UK where I was spending "just a couple of months" after the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow to Beijing late last year. My family is glad to have me, but I won't say I haven't wanted to be somewhere else on many occasions 😂⁠
⁠
My boyfriend, Iain, moved to Japan back in November to start postdoctoral research in Nagoya (he's a chemist 🤓), so we haven't seen each other since then.⁠
⁠
But I decided my motto for this time would be to make use of it, whether that means slowing down or GSD. To begin with, it was focusing on a big website project I was doing for a client as well as my tech writing work that still brings in most my 💸
⁠
Last month, I started slowing down and making more time for my creative projects that light me up and let hours pass without me realising it (like my stuff here for Live Wildly!) And lately I've gone even further in that direction.⁠
⁠
There's a season for everything in life. Sometimes you control it, sometimes you have to let go and roll with it. It can be fast-growth or slow-growth. There's no right or wrong answer. ⁠
⁠
But be conscious of where you are. Think if it's the right thing for what you need right now and ask what you have control over. Check you're not being pushed in a direction that isn't aligned with where you want to be.⁠ Make the pivots you need to find the right balance.⁠
⁠
Breathe, rest, and take time every day to dream and plan. But above all, enjoy the journey. Everything is happening at exactly the right pace 🌱⁠

One of the reasons I left my full-time job two years ago is that I felt stuck. I couldn't expand in my role and while I managed a team, I didn't feel I could move into senior management level. This was very much backed up by what others said about how I was too young, female, shy, different, etc.⁠
⁠
I kept being asked why I wasn't happy where I was, which eventually made me realise two things:⁠
⁠
🌲 That environment wasn't a place I could thrive⁠
🌲 I wanted to create my own success on my terms⁠
⁠
So I found the courage to start my own business. It's been one of the most incredible turning points in my life. ⁠
⁠
This isn't a criticism of "normal jobs". For a huge percent of the population, it's a whole lot easier and more stress-free to follow that path – so don't feel you need to do things any other way. But it fits me perfectly.⁠
⁠
However... after I set my own salary and idea of what I could do, I realised there were still glass ceilings. I was just the one creating them now.⁠
⁠
Without realising it, I had set my own ceilings of what I could do, earn, and be. And it was only when I made a conscious effort to break through those that I had my most successful months. I did this by:⁠
⁠
✨ Charging more than I thought I was worth (I learned I could triple what I thought I could ask for and people would still happily say yes)⁠
✨ Saying yes to projects I thought I wasn't ready or good enough for⁠
✨ Reshaping my idea of what "work" has to look like. Allowing myself to spend less time at a desk while working with more ease and grace.⁠
⁠
SO much comes down to self-worth and belief in what you can or can't do.⁠
⁠
Whether you're in your own biz or not, look out for the ceilings you can control. Where are you limiting what you can achieve? How can you dream bigger and get out of your own way?⁠

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" This Mary Oliver quote changed everything for me. Nearly three years ago, I put it on a Post-it on my bathroom mirror so i could look at it and daydream whenever I saw it.

To make our dreams become our reality, we first have to dare to dream. We can then work out what we really want.

One of my goals for this year is to dream bigger.

One of my goals for this year is to dream bigger. In the last few years, I've got super clear on what I want to achieve. And through a lot of visualisation and journal work, I made so much of it happen.⁠

I built up a six-figure business, went on a 10-day self-sufficient trek from Greenland's ice cap to the sea, and went from $6k in savings to over 10x that.
⁠
Even if dreaming big delivers results, doing so can be uncomfortable and bring up all sorts of blocks. But let's be honest:⁠
⁠
1. Dreaming is free! You will never spend a cent on it. So why not indulge a little?⁠
2. No one needs to know what you're dreaming of. If it makes you feel good, what's the harm?⁠
